My grandson loved this story and reads it to himself over and over.
Some of these ratings seem to be based on confusion over the different versions of the book that are available. Here's a breakdown. For the full-size with all original content, make sure you are ordering the "I Can Read It All By Myself, Beginner Books" edition. This is the version we just ordered and received for my toddler, and it is exactly what we expected/wanted.The "(Big Bright & Early Board Book) Board book" edition is smaller, very much abridged, and all the pages are cardboard stock. This version is for younger babies. Both versions are great - just for different purposes/ages. When my 2 year old was a baby up through just recently, we would read him the board book edition, or he would flip through it himself, and he loved it. It was perfect for his then-shorter attention span. We just recently ordered and received the full version, and it is perfect for him now. As a bonus of starting him on the board book version, while he loved it, he was SO excited to see the additional content when we first showed him the full edition.
This is not the version of the book that I read (over and over) as a kid. It is heavily simplified. The back even says "Classics made simpler and sturdier for younger readers". I get the desire to do this, but I was very disappointed not to receive the book I thought I was getting for my friend's daughter. (It doesn't even have a single instance of the repeated "Do you like my hat?" dialogue that made the original version of this book so distinctive in my memory.)I mainly just wish that it had been possible to tell from the description of the product that this did not contain all of the original text and pictures, so that I would've known to buy a different version.
This is my little one's favorite book! So when her copy got left out in the rain we had to replace it. I have recieved 3 different copies of this book trying to get one that looks the way it should with no luck. The colors are off as you can see in the pictures. Normally this wouldn't be such a big deal but when you are reading to a toddler and tell them the stop light is red but really it's orange that can be pretty confusing. It appears that during the printing process something happened to the red pigment. All the red/orange colors are wrong. I compared the colors of the board book to the regular book so you can see what it should look like. I'm disappointed and a bit annoyed with the whole ordeal. We will be returning the book (for the 3rd time) and purchasing it from somewhere else.
I bought this book for my toddler grandson, thinking that it was the book I remember from childhood. But actually, it is like the readers digest condensed version, except that the entire story has been removed! This book contains 5 or 6 pages of illustrations from the original, but no story whatsoever. I am not sure why this is being sold, but you should not buy it!
I purchased this for my one year old daughter. This used to be my favorite book when I was a child and wanted to make sure the tradition continued with my daughter. However, when I was out once looking for the book, I noticed that there is a new version of this book. I did not like or want this new version so began the search for the original. This is the original book. I would recommend this classic book be added to any child's collection.Pros:1) This is a classic book that should be in every child's library. The story is appropriate for children of all ages. The words are simple and the story teaches children about diversity.2) This is the original version of the book; not the new version.Cons:1) The only con is that this does not come in a board book version. My daughter tends to be rough on books when trying to turn the pages, and the pages of this book can rip.Overall, I highly recommend this book for all families.
I used to read this book to my children and granddaughters. I am now reading it to the newest addition to our family, my little grandson. It is timeless and is very good at firing up the imagination of young children. Children are fascinated with dogs driving around in their cars and having a big dog party up in a tree. It is also a teaching tool, with examples and illustrations of night and day; big and little; over and under, and more. The book was released in 1961 and it could very well remain popular for decades more.
Best book for kids! Teaches colors and opposites. Awesome first reader. Interesting and engaging story for the parent as well as the child. Introduces tons of sight word vocabulary. This book is long and my 18 month old can sit through it all and requests this book constantly. Oh, and best of all, it ends in a dog party! This is one of my favorites of all time!
Oh, what timeless positives haven't already been said about this Eastman classic (Wish I had the publishing rights!). A great book for the 2-4 yr. old kiddies learning to read, and for the parents to read to their kids too. Addictive, clever writing, and always fun. Thank you, P.D.
