I'm 53, I grew up on Robert E Howard, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Tolkien, Asimov and others... these days the non fiction books I typically read are by Tom Clancy, Ludlum, Orson Scott Card .... so this wasn't even close to a typical read for me. I read the Social Tudor to discuss with my mother because I knew she was excited about it.At first I thought this is so wonderfully predictable, I knew that the lead characters were going to get together, just not how. By chapter three I was so engaged with the characters, their family relationships and the dynamics of their odd relationship that I found the predictability of the ending (if I was right, and I really hoped I was) actually seemed to serve the narrative so that the reader could really lean into and focus on the well thought out dialogue and turmoil of emotions experienced by characters... without the distraction of guessing at who might end up with who. I meant only to peruse the book to be conversant... I ended up reading every word, buying 3 additional copies for family... and reading one night til 2am without realizing the time. Was I right in my predictions of who would end up with whom? And was it wonderfully predictable? I can't say... but I would predict that you will enjoy this wonderful book.
This novel is a good, light, traditional Regency romance. The content is clean. The story is well written and the author seems to have researched most relevant topics well.I am a little apprehensive moving on to read the subsequent books in the series, however. My major pet peeve with this genre is how authors perpetuate errors in titles that they see in other Regency novels. So many authors do extensive research, but fail to research British peerage because they think they know it...or maybe they just miss the details. A few issues in this book make me afraid of what I will see in the rest of the series. It really does kill my enjoyment of a book when the titles are wrong.Lucas Calvert, the Earl of Annesbury, is incorrectly addressed throughout the book. His name is Lucas Calvert, but his title is Earl of Annesbury so he would be Lord Annesbury. (Sometimes authors seem to think that when the title name is different than the surname, or when there is an "of" in the title, that they should use Lord Surname...not so. It is Lord Title.) Further, in this novel, the author mentions, in passing, two brothers who will both inherit titles. The younger brother is to receive a title from his mother. There are rare titles that can pass through the female line, but even if there was such a title on the mother's side, after she passed away, it would be inherited by the eldest son, even if he was already the heir or even possessor of their father's title. The only way that the younger son would inherit his mother's title is if the brother's have different mothers...and this is not mentioned. One other note: the author's date on the epilogue seems to be impossible for the timeline, which would require a minimum of three weeks plus three days from the date of the events in the last chapter.
Trying to please a domineering, selfish father, Christine longs for her season in London hoping her success will finally win her father’s affection, but her bumbling attempts at proper etiquette in her small community at home causes her to realize she needs help. She strikes a bargain with Mr. Thomas Gilbert, who has need of her horses to establish his stables. He begins to tutor her in proper behavior for a young lady seeking matrimony. While spending time with him, feelings begin to awaken that could collapse her father’s dreams. Will she have to choose between Thomas and her father? The story flowed nicely. The characters were well developed. I enjoyed this author’s writing style and look forward to reading about Christine’s sisters.
I wasn't sure about this one when it started. Christine comes off in the first bit as a spoiled brat and I could not figure out why the sisters had such a weird relationship. Thomas was aloof and I could not figure out where the author was headed with this one. As with her other books everything came together beautifully! I really enjoyed reading this one, the end was so well done and I just wanted to cheer:} I am totally falling in love with the Earl and I am so excited his book is next. I have now realized I read these all out of order but that didn't diminish them and I was able to sort everything out. These are well written chaste romance books.
I loved this book. I had already read Martha's Patience and The Gentleman Physician and so I knew the author's style and had met the family. I didn't really like Christine too much at first because of the way she treated her sister Julia. After she became enlightened to what a slime her father was and how he had treated her sister (and how she was being manipulated herself), she finally did find the courage to show the independence that she had been downplaying in order to fit into the society of the time. A deus ex machina in the form of a local Lord saved the day and Christine and Thomas get their happily ever after. NOTE: I like the way scenes within chapters are separated ∞∞∞ when the perspective changes between characters.
