The author worked with Michael Coe for years, Coe being one of the most respected names in Maya archaeology, so the author knows his stuff. He makes it clear when he is expressing an opinion, which I appreciate. The illustrations are mostly in bxw but there are some color pages. The text is interesting and factual, although a new edition, updated edition would be nice. It's a good, basic reference book for anyone interested in the Olmec civilization. Unfortunately, we don't know all that much about the Olmecs as they had little or no writing, and the assumption that they were the direct predecessors of the Maya has become questionable. It's a book worth reading and not only the artifacts but the civilization in many aspects.

This book was required for a course that I took with Dr. F. Kent Reilly at Texas State University. Between the its outstanding information and the information shared by Dr. Reilly in class, I learned more about the Olmec (or more correctly the Mixe Zoque) than I had ever imagined. Dehl reviews the sites from San Lorenzo to La Venta, he shares Olmec daily life and culture, and discusses Olmec influence in Eastern and Western Mesoamerica, and concludes the book with a look at the Epi-Olmec cultures. To top it off, the price makes this book an easy buy! This book is an absolute must have for any Mesoamerican or Mixe Zoque enthusiast!

The book is very thorough in describing where and when all of the pictured artifacts were found in Central America. The investigations into the respective ages of those civilization is explained. A very good book

very well documented the handling of the information in a simple way that makes easy to follow I love the book

Fesw people know so much regarding this first people. A must to have. IRMA DICKINSON

History for students and interested individuals that they have never seen before. Useful as a textbook or reference and I recommend it for libraries, retirement homes and schools.

Very thorough review of what we know about the Olmecs, though a little out of date now. Still, an interesting introduction to the subject.

An amazing book! This book relies on nothing but the archeological record, logic, reasoning, and science. The writer clearly states when he's speculating or not.For those of you who think the Olmec are related to Sub-Saharan Africa, Aliens, Chinese, one of the lost seven tribes, or Europeans. There is not one piece of evidence that can be directly linked to any. There is no cultural diffusion between Africa and Mesoamerica period. Afro-centrics have no proud in their own heritage so they look for ways to steal people's culture.
