About the Author
Joe O’Connor is a solar manufacturing entrepreneur as well as a consultant, speaker, and writer on solar energy. Joe has built off grid solar energy systems in the U.S., Haiti, Nepal, Portugal, Guatemala, and most recently in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Joe is currently a Senior Applications Engineer for Energy Storage at Mercedes-Benz Energy. In his previous position at SolarCity, Joe supported the Micro Grid Team and the GivePower Foundation by designing solar photovoltaic and Tesla Powerwall systems. He also prototyped, designed, and patented a new solar racking system that enabled SolarCity to become one of the largest commercial installers in the U.S. Prior to his work at SolarCity, Joe launched a cost-efficient solar racking product at solar manufacturing start-up, Sollega. Joe has also worked with Sustainable Energy Partners in San Francisco, completing dozens of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Joe earned his M.S. from NYU Polytechnic University in Manufacturing Engineering and was selected as a recipient of the Catherine B. Reynolds Foundation Fellowship for Social Entrepreneurship. He earned his B.S. from Cal Poly University in Industrial Technology. He first became passionate about renewable energy after volunteering with GRID Alternatives—the Habitat for Humanities of the solar industry—when he teamed up with other volunteers to install solar electric systems on homes of low-income families in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a great primer with a wealth of information, but there is far too much concentration on Lithium-Ion batteries, which might be great for those that can afford them, but for most readers, will be in a fantasy realm in the present moment. The SOC figures for all lead-acid batteries (Flooded, gel, and AGM) are lumped together, which is misleading, and may cause users with AGM batteries to ruin their batteries by letting their SOC dip below 12.7 V. In the real world, folks normally choose between AGM and flooded batteries due to their geographical situation.
Off Grid Solar is a great starter book for anyone who wants a better understanding of solar energy in general and the potential of "off grid" solar systems specifically. It can also be used as a guide on how to install both the solar panels needed to capture sunlight and the batteries required to store and disperse the retained energy.Joe O'Connor used good analogies to simplify what might otherwise be complex topics to the handyman while providing the science and instructions needed by the electrician or engineer. It's a must read for anyone considering how to move towards personal energy independence with off grid solar energy!Perhaps a better title/subtitle would be something like....Off Grid Solar: a practical guide for understanding and installation.
I’m building a portable solar charger for a time lapse camera and this book was REALLY helpful with the lithium ion section. I realized I needed lithium-ion LFP battery type and now I know why. There was a long section about how lithium-ion batteries are different than lead-acid batteries. There was a lot of other info about installing and designing larger solar systems which I didn’t need to learn, but I could skip section and use the glossary to find what I needed.
I found this to be a good primer in preparation for Camper Van electrical design. The book is well-written, and covers basics such as the essentials of energy, power and electrical physics. I should think that for someone with no prior exposure to those basics that this handbook will be a good start if the reader is willing to knuckle down and study what is written. Even for someone who stays intimidated by the subject of electricity and ends up hiring out the work, the book will help them be a more knowledgeable shopper.The book covers: geographic and seasonal available solar energy, battery chemistries, cost of ownership, battery resistance rate of charge and discharge, how to interpret solar panel datasheets, and sizing and derating an overall system. It has both a proper table of contents and an index for reference. The author provides links to some Excel design spreadsheets that are great!It’s a good start, but won’t cover everything I’ll need for camper van electrical design. I very highly recommend supplementing this handbook with an encyclopedia-sized volume: Boatowners Mechanical and Electrical Manual (www.amazon.com/gp/product/0071790330/) It’s written for yacht owners, but will translate well to your land yacht! The author has vast experience with mistakes that lead to common money-wasting pitfalls. What the boat book will do is help the RV / Camper owner integrate alternator charging as a contingency to protect the battery bank during those inevitable days when solar is not sufficient.
Gives a good intro to off grid solar in one place. I've been reading from all over the Internet but info can be a bit confusing so this is handy as a base. From my limited experience so far, it's better to have more panels than you calculate you need because of overcast/cloudy/rainy days (on overcast days I get about 46% of calculated output including accounting for losses from panel to charge controller). Also, better to have batteries with higher AH capacity since it's best to have only 3 parallel strings in a battery bank.
Not the book to start with. It gets pretty complex for a novice.
Great little book. Some parts could be a little better explained or complete, but quite comprehensive for such a compact guide. Definitely everything I needed (coupled with a little bit of electrical circuit knowledge of my own) to do my first system successfully.
I'm a technically savvy person. There is nothing in the book that I couldn't get on line. I spent $50 on several books to know what else is out there. Now I know - there is nothing. Getting solar energy confidence for $50 is a great investment!
