The author is not the only one who likes these characters. I buy these as soon as they come out. If you like humorous, hopeful science fiction where the different species manage to get along - even with their differences, this is a book and series that you will love reading. These characters have plenty of dimension. LARP night is about live action role playing (LARP) with the usual mini-comedies on the sidelines. Kelly’s sabbatical has to be justified as something other than a vacation. Jeeves (what a great Robot name) is making sure that he gets his money back from Dorothy’s expenditures. This book was a fun way to spend a few hours in someone else’s world.
This is the fourteenth book in the Union Station series by E. M. Foner. Union Station is a space station run by one of a race of AI called the Stryx. The Stryx run an interstellar travel network linking similar space stations. They have a reputation as being good guys and for looking after vulnerable species such as humanity. Most of the Union Station books feature multiple plot strands which, on occasion, only have minor relevance to the title. In this book Live Action Role Playing (LARP) has finally reached Union Station. LARP items are being lost and sent to the station Lost & Found where we find Sam behind the counter. Sam has been a character in previous books but is set to become one of the major characters inthis book. Since LARP is becoming popular it becomes an elective course which Sam, his girlfriend Vivian and two of their alien friends opt for. The course is run by Jeeves the trickster Stryx and the results are not quite as fun as the four friends hoped they would be.In other news… Kelly McAllister, human ambassador to Union Station and EarthCent Minister of Intelligence (see Spy Night on Union Station) is trying to wangle a sabbatical from the notoriously broke EarthCent. She decides to become a dispute mediator and is surprisingly good at it although she has help. The third and final major plot is that of Dorothy McAllister’s wedding. Enough said.Through all of this there is the presence of Stryx Jeeves with his own agenda and trickster/loki personality. This book also sees the welcome return of Baa who is definitely a minor character who needs to become a major one – the scene with the zombies is a hoot. This book takes place approximately 20 years after the first book so many of the characters are well established with backstories of their own. It’s not necessary to have read all of the books in the series but it would help to get the most out of this one. This book maintains the wit of other books and keeps the complex family relationships manageable. It also adds to the depth and color of the universe. These books are a delight to read and E. M. Foner is becoming one of my favorite authors because of the humor and charm of his novels. Just one thing to note; on my kindle this book appeared as one long chapter even though it is divided up into separate chapters within the text. Not my favorite way of doing things as I like books with chapters to have them show up as such in the Kindle’s “Go To†feature.
If Stephen King gives you anxiety (love King), by contrast, E.M. Foner's Union Station series will give you Zen bliss. Union Station is a creative universe not to be matched since The Lord of the Rings, but with a kinder gentler bent. The character development is a joy, you want to know everything about them, the dialogue thought provoking, character-plot informing, while often at the same time "fall down roll on the floor" funny. The universe endlessly fascinating. I reread the first 13 books waiting for Union Station 14, and was surprised at how much I had missed the first time around. Hats off, drum roll and standing ovation applause. And, that delivery schedule? Does E.M. Foner ever take time to eat? Hmmm, now the I mention it, maybe he really is an A.I? Turing tested? Now that would explain a lot. Let's get that rumor started.
This addition to the Union Station series is less a story than a sequence of loosely connected vignettes that provide insights into the alien cultures that Kelly M and the rest of humanity must come to terms with in order to become full-fledged members of the galactic, Stryx-shepherded family. As is obvious from my 5-star rating, I don’t consider this to be a weakness. The individual vignettes are wonderfully entertaining, and favorite characters from past episodes are as alive and likeable as ever.
If you are like me and interesting, consistent characters are what you look for in your fiction then these stories are for you. At least once a year I start at book one and re-read this series. Usually when I reach the end a new episode is released. Foner's stories reflect the world around us with a special twist in time and space and this one is especially good!!
another fun adventure on Union Station! The role playing doesn't only happen in live action games but in real life as Dorothy plays a bride and the Ambassador plays mediator, along with all their friends, human and alien, who continue to grow and evolve as humans speed out into space!
Read them in order - follow "people" who become friends - through the interesting and the mundane - always with a smile. This one just carries the story on - if you love the fist book you'll love them all. Lots of fun and - well, I'm hooked. Sublime and happy Space Opera - no galactic battles or world destructions - just interesting and enjoyable speculative fiction ... wish I was there ...
I really enjoyed the high tech LARP action in this book. I've been reading the last several books at a leisurely pace knowing that I'm getting closer to the (currently) last book in the series and not knowing when book sixteen will be released. I hope that Mr. Foner will develop the all-species love of LARPing even more in future releases. It should definitely be a fixture in this universe and not just a passing fad.
